Morris Dems CD11 Special Nomination Convention

What is the CD11 Special Nomination Convention?

  • The Special Nomination Convention is where we will gather as a party to decide who we will endorse and support in the special election primary on February 5th.

When and where will we have our convention?

  • On Sunday, December 14, at 11:00 am, we will meet in The Davidson Room, at the County College of Morris (214 Center Grove Rd, Randolph, NJ 07869) to hear from all candidates running.

Who can vote in the MCDC Nominating Convention?

  • County Committee Members
  • Municipal Chairs
  • Democratic Elected Officials
  • State Committee Members
  • County E-Board
  • Caucus Chairs
  • Voting members get a single vote per election (e.g., someone who is an Democratic elected official and a caucus chair only has one vote).
  • Members vote only for races in the district where they live.
    • E.g., Members who live in CD11 do not vote for CD7 candidates and vice versa

What is the voting method?

  • Morris County uses Election Buddy software to facilitate our election.
  • We will be using a ranked choice voting method.
  • Your vote is secret.

What is the voting process?

  • After candidate speeches at the nominating convention, members with voting rights will be emailed a link to cast a secret ballot online, and will have 24-hours to vote. Only those who qualify for one of the voting rights criteria can participate in voting.
  • Those who receive the right to vote as county committee members must show up on the county committee list maintained by the Morris County Clerk by close of business on the last business day before the convention.
  • Any registered Democrat is welcome to attend the convention and watch the proceedings. However, if occupancy is reached, those with voting rights will be prioritized for admittance.
  • Any issues with voting or support needed should email director@morrisdems.org.

What is the Screening Committee?

  • Per the MCDC Bylaws, the County Chair must appoint a Screening Committee at least two months before the filing deadline or immediately after a vacancy arises.
    • This is the first time MCDC is implementing this requirement. We will continue to adapt and refine the process and seek member feedback on what worked, what didn’t, and how to improve it going forward.
  • The committee includes at least two Executive Board members and at least two relevant Democratic elected officials. Screening committee members may not endorse a candidate ahead of the screening process.
  • The goal of the Screening Committee is to provide a thoughtful assessment of each candidate. Its role is to evaluate candidates on policy, organization, and fundraising. It is the job of the Screening Committee to identify and encourage suitable candidates, invite interested persons to apply for consideration, interview and consider candidates, and make recommendations to the Members.
  • This year the screening committee is having all candidates provide written responses to a questionnaire, and will be producing an interview video series to help inform members on all the candidates ahead of the convention.
