2022 Election Update Press Release

Big Night for Morris County Democrats! Incumbents Win, Morris Township Flips to All Democrats and New Dem Candidates Win Seats!

MORRIS PLAINS – The 2022 election was a good night for Morris County Democrats! All local incumbent Democratic officials won their races. In a historic victory, Morris Township will be an entirely Democratic Committee, and Democrats netted out three new municipal seats!

Meanwhile, Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill, who represents most of Morris County, beat her Republican challenger by a stunning margin of 17 points.

Democrats swept races in Chatham Borough, Chatham Township, Dover, Madison, Morris Plains, Morris Township, Mountain Lakes and Victory Gardens. Additional victories were achieved in Boonton, East Hanover and Netcong. The race for a seat in Mendham Township is tight, with provisional ballots and Vote by Mail ballots that are continuing to arrive still to be counted.

“I want to congratulate our winning candidates on their successful races,” said Morris County Chairwoman Amalia Duarte. “Voters responded to our candidates and their platforms in communities across the County! These results show that Democrats are a growing force in Morris County.”

“While they did not prevail, the County Commissioner candidates and other local contenders ran strong races and elevated issues that are important to voters, including government transparency, the environment and smart growth,” said Duarte. “We are, of course, disappointed with some of the results, but we accept them and move forward.”

ELECTION DAY PROBLEMS

The Morris County Democratic Committee is deeply disturbed by problems that occurred with voting throughout the county:

  • The paper ordered by Morris County Clerk Ann Grossi for the voting machines was the wrong length in size.
  • The County Commissioners did not allocate to purchase enough machines for some municipalities, leading to long lines and waits.
  • There were discrepancies in Mendham Township with voters placed in the wrong district by Clerk Grossi.

“We know of residents in Mendham Township who had to return to the polls after not being able to cast a ballot because they were placed in the wrong congressional district,” said Duarte. “In Chester there were long waiting times. It’s appalling that with so much time to prepare for an election, such basic, fundamental mistakes were made by County Clerk Ann Grossi. It’s appalling and sadly undermines the faith voters have in elections. Voting should be easy and straightforward.”

“We need an investigation into these problems to find answers and ensure it never happens again,” said Duarte.
