Candidate Bio

Diane Salvatore is a magazine and digital journalism professional, and a four-time Editor in Chief, including for Consumer Reports, Prevention and Ladies’ Home Journal. Before that, she held senior editorial roles at Good Housekeeping and Glamour.

Inspired over career witnessing the power of authentic collaboration between elected officials and motivated citizens, Salvatore is running for State Assembly. Her goal is to make New Jersey an excellent place for new retirees and seniors to thrive, by advocating for creative, thoughtful and affordable living and housing options that will ensure greater cross-generational benefits in our neighborhoods.

Over her career, Salvatore focused on creating high-quality, mission-based journalism aimed at improving people’s lives through community and policy change. She specialized in coverage of urgent social issues including the prevention of gun violence, food and water safety, women’s health care, funding for hospital ERs, sexism in judicial decisions, insurance bias among people of color, the lack of supplement regulation, teen suicide, drunk driving, and more.

Over her career, Salvatore has interviewed three U.S. presidents, (Barack Obama, George Bush and Bill Clinton); Secretary of State Hillary Clinton; Senator John Kerry and First Lady Michelle Obama, as well as news anchors Robin Roberts and Diane Sawyer.

Salvatore’s work was twice nominated for a prestigious American Society of Magazine Award. Her magazine work has won multiple awards, among them a Folio Edie Award for best women’s lifestyle title, a National Citizens’ Coalition Public Service Award and American College of Emergency Physicians Journalism of Excellence award. She is a winner of the “W” award for innovation from YWCA; she was named a Folio: 40 Industry Leaders with Impact, and was given the Athena Award in from Columbia University for her commitment to high-quality health journalism.

Salvatore also led digital consumer product innovation at Lee Enterprises, the country’s third-largest chain of news sites. She has also been VP and Publisher of Broadway Books, a division of Crown/Random House, publishing titles in narrative non-fiction, current affairs, and memoir.

She lives with her spouse and their mini long-haired dachshund, and tends daily to her backyard birds.
